IAPD’s PowerPlay! Beyond School Grants Focus on Health

A former economics professor with a respected university, Joseph Petry joined Mayfair Financial as a financial analyst and business consultant in 2015. A believer in the benefits of parks and open spaces, Joseph “Joe” Petry has held membership with the Prairie Rivers Board and served as chairman of the Illinois Association of Park Districts.

A non-profit organization dedicated to promoting open spaces and natural areas throughout the state, the Illinois Association of Park Districts (IAPD) supports recreational areas as a way to improve the quality of life. The IAPD operates programs such as the PowerPlay! Beyond School Grant program, which emphasizes health, fitness, and nutrition for kindergarteners through high schoolers. Funds from this grant program may be used to implement health-focused programming within park districts, forest preserves, or recreation agencies.

Per the association, 20 percent of school-age children in Illinois are alone and unsupervised from 3 to 6 pm, during which time juvenile crime rates triple. Young people who participate in beyond school programs are half as likely to abuse drugs or alcohol or engage in other dangerous behaviors, IAPD states. The PowerPlay! Beyond School Grant program is designed to help those children at risk.
